CENTER ORGANIZATION

This chart illustrates the organizational chart for the 3DFeM2 Energy Frontier Research Center.

organizational chart of 3DFeM2 showing Thrust leads, executive committee, scientific advisory board and more

3DFeM2 is be housed under the Penn State University’s Materials Research Institute (the umbrella organization for Materials, encompassing >300 faculty), and the Penn State Senior Vice President for Research. Administration will be handled by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research. This office supports and administrates large, complex research projects, including many centers on campus that involve faculty from multiple colleges, institutes, or outside entities.

The 3DFeM2 Director, Susan Trolier-McKinstry, is an Evan Pugh University Professor, Flaschen Professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Penn State. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of IEEE, MRS, and the American Ceramic Society. She has ~40 years of experience in ferroelectricity, the processing science of ferroelectrics grown by chemical solution deposition, sputtering, and pulsed laser deposition, and in integrating ferroelectrics into functional devices, including wurtzite ferroelectrics for memory application.

The Associate Directors are Narayanan and Dickey. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan is the Noll Chair Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Penn State. He leads the Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Engineering Systems at Penn State with over 80 research groups. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, IEEE, AAAS and the Association for Computing Machinery.  Elizabeth Dickey, Hawkins Distinguished Professor and Department Head of Materials Science & Engineering at CMU, is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the Materials Research Society, the Microscopy Society of America, and the AAAS.

Working together, the director and associate-directors, with input from the advisory board, will establish scientific and engineering priorities for the center, allocate budgets to investigators, monitor data compliance, ensure compliance with all environmental health and safety standards, and represent the 3DFeM2 team to the Department of Energy and the larger scientific community.

The Thrust 1 leader Jon-Paul Maria is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State. The Thrust X leader Ichiro Takeuchi is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and an Affiliate Professor of Physics at University of Maryland.  The Thrust 2 leader Suman Datta is the Pettit Chair of Advanced Computing, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech.  Progress requires a continuous feedback loop between the three Thrusts.   Meet our Principle Investigators.

The Executive committee (Director, associate directors, thrust leaders, plus Jon Ihlefeld and Rama Vasudevan) will provide the strategic vision, direction, and essential decision-making to guide and motivate the larger team.

A diverse pool of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars will be at the heart of the program.  Meet our Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Researchers.
